I found a <a href="http://www.dcmsonline.org/jax-medicine/1998journals/may1998/lemel3.jpg">similar drawing</a> on the web - if you look at the segment labeled "AX", that is the axillary nerve. As you can see, it is a very short segment and will only take about 6 months to recover - much better than if the damage had started at the neck (which is the far left of the drawing)
