GREAT DAY FOR A HANGING is what Mike Massee described last Saturday as the billboard he designed for the Mojave welcome sign on Highway 14 south of town was installed. The billboard uses photos Massee, in the red shirt at far left, took of the final Ansari X-Prize flight and a shot of nearby wind turbines, symboling two of this region’s major industries. Funding for the Mojave Chamber of Commerce billboard came from a grant of county tax revenues collected from visitors to Mojave hotels and motels. Mojave Rocket boosters Billye Deaver, at left, and Glenda Willie, watch as the installation is completed. Similar billboards are planned on each of the town’s four entrances. BILL DEAVER/Desert News
